The trip will start with a drive to the Great Wall at Huanghuacheng, which is fast becoming popular with hikers, features classically restored brickwork, and the way it glides and bends across the mountainside. Situated along a lake, Huanghuacheng is a picturesque section of the wall, so remember to bring your camera. About halfway through the hike, we'll pass over into Xishuiyu, a part of the Great Wall, a little known section of Great Wall that is unrestored, meaning that the "wild wall" starts to take the hole. As we walk along with the wall's ruins here, you will get to see something exceptional, the broken Great Wall running underwater.
Our professional tour guide will pick you up from your hotel. We'll head for Huanghuacheng (Yellow Flower Town). It is the last gate of the foreign power to enter the capital. It is known as the "North Gate of the Capital." The rock wall near the pass is engraved with the word "Jin Tang" written during the Ming years, presumably to describe this point as a reliable and dangerous place.
Your hike today will be from Huanghuacheng to Xishuiyu, which is about 10 km (4 hours of hiking)
The fantastic countryside of Huanghuacheng Great Wall is covered in a yellow mass of wildflowers in the summer, Also known as the 'Yellow Flower Town' of the Great Wall. This section of the Great Wall has no stone steps or a single smooth walkway, and it provides quite a challenge for its visitors. Another significant feature is the Lake that gives it that extra unique feel to your visit when hiking this beautiful section.
The majority of the Xishuiyu Great Wall is in a decent condition. Some parts have weakened over time and look worn, but it hasn't fallen yet. This area lets you see the real Great Wall and what it is like before restoration. It is a piece of history; not many people get to explore. We will head west and eventually see the Great Wall's location meets the water and follows a path under the water.
Before we drop you off at your hotel, we will stop by the Olympic Park, where you can take some pictures of the famous Birds Nest and the Water Cube. These are symbolic buildings in Beijing from the 2008 Olympics.
Thanks to GWA and our amazing guide, Oliver! We had decided to explore the great Wall in a way that was challenging and possibly away from the most common tourists routes. This was the right choice! An energetic hike up and down sections of the old and renovated parts the wall, beautiful scenery with the lake in the background, and no other tourists in the vicinity.
The day was completed by an amazing lunch at a very authentic restaurant in the countryside. Excellent choice if you are in good shape and want to explore the great wall off the beaten path. Loved it!
