TOUR 1B: Jiankou to Mutianyu Great Wall Hiking Tour
Why hiking at Jiankou is worthwhile?
What makes Jiankou so historic and beautiful is its completely unrestored status. You will get a personal close up view of the ancient Goat Wall. You will experience some fantastic ruins of watchtowers and scenery, making for an unforgettable hike. After a few hours, you'll cross into Mutianyu, a primarily restored portion of the Great Wall that is very popular but not as touristy as other sections. One of the most photographed parts of the Great Wall and has featured in many movies!
In-depth Itinerary
We will meet you from your hotel at 8 am and drive to the Jiankou section of the Great Wall and start hiking to Mutianyu.
The Jiankou section is known for its ruggedness and wild beauty, and you will be in awe of the marvelous views it affords. As soon as we reach Jiankou, we will see a deserted watchtower that gives you a panoramic view of the entire valley. In the early morning, the look is priceless with its morning fog. This section of the wall is not well known by tourists, although if you see a picture of the Great Wall from exotic traveling magazines, chances are it is from Jiankou. This is the pinnacle of fascinating Great Wall scenery. This part of the wall is often empty so that you will have some peace and serenity on your hike today.
From Jiankou, we will cross over onto Mutianyu, a section of the wall that has been largely restored. Mutianyu offers some breathtaking views of the valley and wall below.
You can hike down to the parking lot or take a cable car. Why not have a bit of fun and make a toboggan ride (slide) down to meet our driver. We will then have lunch at a local restaurant. Later drive back to Beijing and drop you off at your hotel so you can enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

We did not book our trip ahead of time and were only in Beijing for 2 days. This seemed to be the only company that we were able to book the day before. The price was comparable to most all others and reviews seemed good, so we gave it a shot.
We booked the tour for 10:00am and the guide picked us up from the hotel right on time and found us in the lobby. As the website states, the guide did speak English and was very polite and personable. They did get a mix up with our vehicle reservation; however, they offered to accommodate us with another, but we were more than happy to take the one they sent.
Oliver was our tour guide, and other than being able to see the Great Wall in person, he was probably the best part of the trip. Right from the start he asked us if we needed to make a stop for provisions and made sure we were all comfortable. He even offered to get us a larger vehicle, but again, we were very happy with the car we had. He gave us ETAs as we drove, which was about 1 1/2 hours from our hotel, but this kept us at ease.
Once we arrived at the Great Wall, he took all of the hassle and stress out of the unknown and made it a more than pleasant experience. He bought our entry tickets for us, our gondola lift tickets, and our toboggan slide (which was another great recommendation).
Once we got to the wall itself, he made sure that we had water and let us prepare ourselves at our own pace. He offered to take plenty of pictures when needed, but was not intrusive. After we walked around for a while and he explained the history of the Great Wall, he asked if we would like him to show us around the wall more, or if we would like to venture on our own. The Great Wall was absolutely beautiful and we were lucky enough to have clear skies. What an amazing experience!!
After we tired ourselves out (did not take long), he was right where he said he was going to meet us and asked us if we wanted to continue. At this point, we were ready for lunch, which he recommended a great restaurant. We all 4 ate lunch together and had a couple drinks and then walked through a few shops.
I had to get a few gifts for family, friends and co-workers and Oliver actually made sure that I didn't overpay. He helped me bargain down the price of my gifts to over half of what they initially asked me which was more than a kind gesture.
On the way back, he asked if we needed to make any additional stops, made recommendations and offered to help us with finding a ride to the airport in the morning.
I would say that our overall experience was beyond our expectations and our phenomenal guide is the reason to say so. I would highly recommend this company and if you can request anybody, ask for Oliver. He will make sure you feel comfortable, answer all of your historical questions and give you a couple laughs too.

The Jiankou Great Wall is located in Huairou, a suburb of Beijing. The walls are naturally weathered without any artificial modification. It is the most rugged, most ambitious, and the majestic section of Beijing. The Jiankou Great Wall is named after the entire Great Wall meandering in a W-shape and shaped like a full bow. The ancient Great Wall experienced difficulties in the baptism of wind and rain. Although the enemy buildings and city walls were damaged, they still showed the old style. The Great Wall resembles a giant dragon, following the mountain. The Great Wall annihilated in the weed bushes shows the exquisiteness of the Wild Great Wall. The higher the hill, the more beautiful the scenery.
The Mutianyu Great Wall has dense enemy buildings, with double-sided dugs, coexistence of internal and external branches, female walls, platforms, lookouts, and shots ...
