A little secret… it's quiet and one of the most beautiful sections.
Mutianyu Great Wall, “Beijing's No. 1 Great Wall”, enjoys the reputation of “the most beautiful Mutianyu” among the Great Walls in Beijing. Compared with the crowded and transitional commercialization of the Badaling Great Wall, the Mutianyu Great Wall shows a simpler and quieter Great Wall.
Mutianyu is the perfect alternative if you are looking for more of a peaceful experience. It is known for its steep landscape and its uniqueness.
Differing from that part of the Great Wall more widely visited, this section is renowned for its unique Barricades. This section of the Great Wall is more defensive-minded and is seen in the photos as there is a one thousand meters long wall that is parallel to the main wall to boost the defenses from attackers.
Mutianyu, as mentioned before, is steep, meaning it is more demanding physically. Many steps are thin and long, and you might be climbing with all fours! But don't worry if you're not up to climb all the steps there are cable cars at the ready so you can enjoy the beautiful views and get to your destination to take in some unforgettable photos.
Mutianyu is a very fabulous and eye-catching part of the wall with its natural landscape. In autumn, especially the maple trees, fill the place with beauty. Other times performances are held at the wall to bring you back in time. The wall stretches just 2 kilometers and is the most restored part of the wall, which boosts safety concerns.
A beautiful quite trip to the Great Wall.
My husband and I are not advance planners, but we felt so fortunate to have found a quality service in Great Wall Adventures available so last minute!
We were paired with tour guide Oliver and driver Mr. Ding and could not have been more pleased with their service! They picked us up at our hotel at noon and we made excellent time - just about an hour 15 due to less traffic. Oliver spoke great English and educated us on the history of the Great Wall on our trip to the Mutianyu section of the Wall. Oliver also knew all of the great spots for pictures, and what an added bonus to not just have selfies on the Great Wall!
Would definitely book with these guys again, especially with Oliver and Mr. Ding!

There are many Great Walls to the north of Beijing, all of which were defensive fortresses that guarded the border at that time. They were built according to the terrain, and each segment has its own characteristics. Check our full list of day hikes, and sunset, sunrise hikes.
Mutianyu Great Wall is connected to Juyongguan in the west and Gubeikou in the east. It was first built in the North Qi and rebuilt in the early Ming Dynasty. It was built by the famous general Xu Da. The Mutianyu Great Wall stands on top of the mountain and winds like a dragon, which was an important barrier for Huanghua Town, North Gate of Beijing Normal University.
The construction of Mutianyu Great Wall has a unique style. The Zhengguantai, where three enemy buildings are tied together, is rare for the Great Wall. To the northwest are the Great Wall landscape nodes, commonly known as "burdock corners," "arrow buckles," and "eagles flying down."
Mutianyu Great Wall has dense enemy towers. From Muzi Yitai (Dajiaolou) to Muzi Four (Zhengguantai). Less than 500 meters, there are 4 enemy towers; from Muzi one to Muzi twenty, the length is only 3,000 meters. There are 25 enemy towers, enemy platforms, wall platforms, and bunks. This structure is pretty rare to see throughout the Great Wall.
