2B: Camping at Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall with hiking the four most photogenic portions

Legal Camping Guarantee and Adventure Summary

Great Wall Adventure Club is the only authorized business that is approved by the Great Wall Administration Office to offer camping on the Great Wall to all our customers. We are not like any other Tour guide company. We are unique because 100% of our focus is on the customer.

We pay a fee to the Great Wall Administration Office that allows us access to places where we camp. No other companies have the authority to do so. Great Wall Adventure Club is not only the perfect guide for your Great Wall hike and camping experience but the ONLY one.

The fantastic countryside of Huanghuacheng Great Wall is covered in a yellow mass of wildflowers in the summer, Also known as the 'Yellow Flower Town' of the Great Wall. This section of the Great Wall has no stone steps or a single smooth walkway, and it provides quite a challenge for its visitors. Another significant feature is the Lake, where the Great Wall goes under that gives it that extra unique feel to your visit when hiking this beautiful section.

The next stage is a short drive to Jiankou. What makes Jiankou so historic and beautiful is its completely unrestored, you will get a persona close up view of the ancient Goat Wall. You'll experience some fantastic ruins of watchtowers and scenery, making for an unforgettable hike. After a few hours, you'll cross into Mutianyu, a primarily restored portion of the Great Wall that is very popular but not as touristy as other sections. One of the most photographed parts of the Great Wall and has featured in many movies.

Review from Elaine

This was a life-changing experience. The difficulty was high, the scenery spectacular, the reward is priceless.  We took a dirt path of about 3 km to the first watchtower. From there I am unable to further describe the grandeur. At the end of that day we rode the slide to the bottom, ate a yummy lunch (3:00 pm) and then went to our farmer's hotel.

We chose the 2B two day package but did the long day first since we had an early start. You need to be in very good shape, good hiking shoes, not be afraid of heights, and hiking poles are very useful. That is until you have to put them away and use your hands for balance or to sit down and slide down the steep slopes. I also had biking gloves which helped with the limbing.

ITINERARY

DAY 1: Huanghuacheng Lakeside and Xishuiyu (10 kms, 4 hours of hiking)

At around 9:30 am our Guide will meet and take you by private car or minivan to the Huanghuacheng section of the Great Wall. During your hike of the wall, you will be able to witness the lovely yellow flowers usually blooming during the late spring and early summer in the surrounding countryside. In this section of the wall, you will pass by many different types of towers. But the highlight of this trip is viewing the wall underwater.

After the hike, local Chinese cuisine will be cooked up, especially for you. You will eat in a restaurant called “The Ancient Path” certified by Great Wall Adventure Club, where chefs cook with organic poultry they breed locally and vegetables planted in their yard. The next stage is to prepare for a night of camping on the Great Wall itself, spending your time in a watchtower that was once guarded by soldiers.

DAY 2: Jiankou to Mutianyu Hike (9 kms, 3.8 hours of hiking)

Watch the beautiful sunrise in the early morning and Catch some extraordinary scenery that you can look back on for a lifetime.

The Jiankou section is known for its ruggedness and wild beauty, and you will be in awe of the marvelous views it affords. As soon as we reach Jiankou, we will see a deserted watchtower that gives you a panoramic view of the entire valley. In the early morning, the look is priceless with its morning fog. The mountain range of the Jiankou Great Wall is very changeable, and the Great Wall above the cliffs of Dangerous Peaks is even more magnificent. The Wall here is not well known by tourists, although if you see a picture of the Great Wall from exotic traveling magazines, chances are it is from Jiankou.

From Jiankou, we will cross over onto Mutianyu, a section of the Wall that has been largely restored. Mutianyu offers some breathtaking views of the valley and the Wall below.

You can hike down to the parking lot or take a cable car. Why not have a bit of fun and take a toboggan ride (slide) down to meet our driver. We will then have a lunch at a local restaurant. Then drive back to Beijing and drop you off at your hotel so you can enjoy the rest of your afternoon.

Don’t forget to share your beautiful photos of our Great Hall of fame.
