In just three days, you will get an adventure that is impossible to forget. You will visit some of the most famous areas of the Great Wall, including where the battle took place between Chinese and Japanese soldiers in the 1930s.
One of the biggest highlights is getting the chance to spend a night on the Great Wall itself! Get to see a Great Wall sunset and sunrise. It is incredible to experience this on the wall. Please read below for a more detailed description.
9:30 am: We will pick you up from your hotel, and drive directly to the Gubeikou section of the Great Wall, our journey to the Great Wall at Gubeikou will take a 2 hours drive. Gubeikou is unique in its way as it varies in size and design. It is a long windy wall which is very steep. This view is terrific and you will get to take it all in for about 10km. You will also have the opportunity to watch the sunset fall over the Great Wall, a unique experience you won't want to miss!
The Jinshanling Great Wall possesses an excellent opportunity to take in some fabulous views. Make sure to take your camera. You will not be disappointed! This part of the Great Wall has not been repaired since 1570. It is very remote, but it's what makes it so unique and a great chance to experience the nature and the wild parts of the Wall.
Then we'll take you to have some Chinese cuisine served by a local housewife. Before the sun sets, we will make our way back up the Wall to prepare camp where we will spend a night in a famous watchtower! Sleeping under the stars on the Great Wall itself an experience you won't forget!
Distance: 12km
Time: 4.5 hrs
Accommodation: Camping in a watchtower
Meals: Lunch and dinner
Water: Unlimited bottles
Wake up early for the beautiful sunrise!
This area is stunning and known for its white glow and its steepness. Known as 'Arrow Nock' in English as it features an arrow-shaped mountain. The Great Wall at Jiankou retains its original appearance since its construction in 1368. It is known for its 'wildness' otherwise untouched, unrestored, and has all its history on display for you to see! One of the most notable features is its zigzags for 9.3 miles.
We will walk across to Mutianyu, which is always like a swarm of bees around a beehive. Mutianyu is the perfect alternative if you are looking for more of a peaceful experience. Mutianyu is known for its steep landscape and its uniqueness. After hiking down or after taking the toboggan (slide) down, which is truly fun for kids and adults,
We will transfer to Huanghucheng for a night's sleep.
Distance: 9km. Time: 4.5 Hours
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Accommodation: Great Wall resort village
Water: Unlimited
A wake-up call at 7:30 is with breakfast. We will then continue our trek, this time from Huanhuacheng to Xishuiyu.
Huanghuacheng sits near a lake and a reservoir. The crescent-shaped reservoir is called Huanghuacheng Reservoir, while the name of the lake is Jintang. It might not be the highest, longest, or most challenging stretch of wall, but Huanghuacheng’s water features create a variety of scenery, unlike any other section. It also hosts a perhaps unrivaled choice of activities.
Besides walks on the rather tastefully restored portion, there is also a unique range of boat trips, including sightseeing cruises, rowing boats upon the Haoming Lake that the wall encircles. One of the best things about the Huanghuacheng Great Wall, it is mostly quite. Compared to other sections, this is a fantastic area of the Great Wall that is both unique and holds an exciting past.
You will return to Beijing at around 6 pm.
Distance: 11 kms Time: 4.5 Hours
Accommodation: Great Wall Farmotel
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Water: Unlimited
We did the 3 day route 3AA and it exceeded all expectations, resulting in the most amazing views and experience! Albeit slightly more challenging than expected. I'm 32 with a reasonable experience of Scottish mountain hiking and good fitness, but no rock climbing experience, while my girlfriend has a good fitness level but little hiking experience.
Our guide Aaron and driver collected us from Beijing in a comfortable Car along with 2 Canadians, which we used throughout the trip. Plenty of water was provided and the food was excellent wherever we stopped. Aaron was the perfect guide, giving us hikes to suit our wants, confidence when required and timely history lessons.
In summary; we walked 15 hours over 3 days. Aaron knew the areas of the wall so well, that we passed only 2 other groups in the first 14 of those hours and felt like we had the wall to ourselves! We finished exhausted but excited at our achievement, with great memories and amazing photos!
Day 1 Lakeside: we had lunch before beginning the first day hiking. This was a 45 min ascent on unrestored wall, with around 3 hours on unrestored wall with spectacular views without passing a single person. Then 1 hour of restored section where we met a handful of fellow hikers. No difficult climbs but a few scrambles and some big drops off the side of narrow paths. The day was not technically difficult but tiring. The night was spent in a basic but comfortable farmer's b&b.
Day 2 Jiankou : after day 1, Aaron gave us the choice to do the easier restored section with the toboggan, or the more spectacular and challenging unrestored section (since he felt we handled day 1 well). We opted for the challenging section and were rewarded with the best views of the trip by far. However, there are numerous narrow ledges with big drops and a few "little adventures" as Aaron described them, which were 3-4 story steep sections to climb up or down. These are closer to rock climbing and a good level of fitness and confidence is required, although we all managed successfully and Aaron's knowledge and confidence of the route made us feel safe.
Camping in a guard tower on night 2 could have been an amazing experience, but we were effectively sleeping on a stone floor and no one got more than half an hour sleep. Definitely bring some sort of inflatable mattress to make this an enjoyable experience.
Day 3 Gubeikou & Jinshanling: early start at 5:30 with more spectacular views on unrestored wall. Although we also had around 1.5 hours walking around the military zone through fields, but then back onto the wall for the restored section at Jinshanling. These are great for photos, but busier. 2 hours drive back to Beijing for 1pm.
All in this was one of the greatest experience of our lives and we wouldn't have changed a thing (except bringing an inflatable mattress).
