Huanghuacheng (Yellow Flower Town) sits near a lake and a reservoir. The crescent-shaped reservoir is called Huanghuacheng Reservoir, while the name of the lake is Jintang.
It might not be the highest, longest or most challenging stretch of wall, but the water here features create a variety of scenery, unlike any other section. It also hosts a perhaps unrivaled choice of activities.
Besides walks on the rather tastefully restored portion, there is also a unique range of boat trips, including sightseeing cruises, rowing boats upon the Haoming Lake that the wall encircles. One of the best things about the Huanghuacheng Great Wall, it is mostly quite. Compared to other sections, this is a fantastic area of the Great Wall that is both unique and holds an exciting past.

Wake up early to welcome the sunrise.
A stunning area is known for its white glow and its steepness. Known as 'Arrow Nock' in English as it features an arrow-shaped mountain. It was built in the Ming Dynasty era (1368 - 1644). Today The Great Wall at Jiankou retains its original appearance since its construction in 1368. It is known for its 'wildness' otherwise untouched, unrestored, and has all its history on display for you to see! One of the most notable features is its zigzags for 9.3 miles.
Once we descend from the Great Wall, we will spend the night at a farmer's inn.

Not many people know about this part of the Great Wall (Mutianyu) as well as the other section and more populous section, Badaling. Mutianyu is known for its steep landscape and its uniqueness.
You will then experience a Chinese style cuisine dinner that lives locally. After some delicious food, we will sleep overnight in a watchtower on the Great Wall. Gubeikou is unique in its way as it varies in size and design. It is a long windy wall which is very steep. This view is terrific and you will get to take it all in for about 10km. The Jinshanling Great Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has parts of its wall restored about a quarter. The rest is all unrestored, which gives you a more personal experience of The Great wall bringing you back in time. We will see the sunset while hiking on the wall.
In 1933, the Chinese army fought against a Japanese invasion at Gubeikou. After four long months of battling, there were over 5000 Japanese soldiers killed and 9000 Chinese soldiers. You can see that Gubeikou is not merely a relic, but it remained as a battlefield in the modern world.

Jinshanling's right-wing, where we will hike until we reach Simatai West called Second Valley. As we head west, the wall will start to deteriorate gradually, making the hike progressively more challenging, but also interesting to observe and compare.
The Jinshanling Great Wall possesses an excellent opportunity to take in some fabulous views. This part of the Great Wall has not been repaired since 1570. It is very remote, but it's what makes it so unique and a great chance to experience the nature and the wild parts of the wall.
The Simatai West section called the Second Valley. It is also unrestored and is ruins. This part of the wall is known as the real Great Wall as it hasn't been touched or refurbished, this brings you back in time to when it was first built! You will also get to see how the wall was designed for practical purposes, such as the defense against enemies and how the Great Wall was supposed to keep them out. There are 'obstacle-walls' built perpendicular to the parapets - a feature unique to the Second Valley part of Jinshanling Great Wall.

I just returned from a fabulous 7-day trek on the Great Wall of China organized by Great Wall Adventure Club. I was so pleased with my experience, the care and compassion of our our tour guide and driver, and the responsive support offered via email, texts, and phone calls from their offices in both China and the United States. Our tour guide, Oliver, accessed every resource to accommodate our needs plus - added some exciting history lessons along the way. How special the entire hiking adventure was and I hope to have another opportunity with GWAC, again!
